Elafonisi Balos and Falassarna among the 20 best beaches of the world

According to the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2026, four Greek beaches are ranked among the 20 best beaches in the world. Elafonissi Beach in Crete is ranked 2nd worldwide, while Balos Lagoon, also in Crete, holds 3rd place. Falasarna Beach is ranked 11th, and Paleokastritsa Beach in Corfu is ranked 14th.

The top-ranked beach in the world is Isla Pasion in Mexico.

These Greek beaches are renowned for their crystal-clear waters, white sandy shores, and stunning natural landscapes, with several of them being protected under the Natura 2000 conservation network.

It is worth noting that this is a unique global distinction for our Municipality, as all three of these beaches are located within the Municipality of Kissamos. Falasarna Beach is just 2 km from our accommodations, Elafonissi Beach is 50 km away and can be reached in approximately one hour by car, while Balos Lagoon is accessible in less than one hour by boat from the port of our area.

What makes all three of these beaches stand out is their white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and the impressive mountains rising behind them. These features are the result of geological processes shaped by the great earthquake that is often referred to as the event that “lifted” western Crete. This was the devastating earthquake of July 21, AD 365.

Finally, it is well worth staying until sunset, which at all three beaches is considered among the most spectacular and breathtaking in Crete.
